Lena is 13 years old. She cannot walk and cannot sit well. Lena is suffering
from a disease of the central neural system that is not well understood and
without a known cure. Lena needs a special invalid wheelchair with straps.
Such a wheelchair is very expensive ($1,500) and her family cannot afford it.
Lena's mother does not have a job. Her father works at the factory and his
salary and pension is hardly enough for food and medicine. That is why Lena's
mother asked for help to buy the wheelchair. Without the special wheelchair Lena had to live with constant torment. RGN helped to pay for the wheelchair.

Alesha Lobanov was under supervision of Moscow Children's Hospital since birth.
Alesha has a very rare disease, total defect of the lymphosystem, which causes
large amounts of lymph in abdominal cavity, edemas of arms, legs and genitals.
Alesha's liver and kidneys were deformed and had to be removed. The liquid,
which presses on the lungs and the heart, is constantly pumped out. The edemas
make Alesha ugly, but he is not mentally ill. He is a normal child, clever
and kind. His parents constantly struggle for his life. Now Alesha is in a
sanatorium, receiving massage and bandages to help withdrawal of the lymph.
He requires special German bandages, which his parents cannot afford ($300).
RGN paid for the bandages for Alesha.

David Khachatrian is ill with Burkitt's lymphoma (a solid tumor of
lymphocytes, used by the immune system to make antibodies). David also
experiences illness complications -- a fungus infection. David is one of
five children in a refugee family from Baku; the family was unable to buy
the only available $1000 treatment for the boy. With the help of RGN's
money David received the necessary medicine. David hopes to get well soon
and to become a professional football player when he is healthy.

Beslab Saaev, 12 years old, desperately needed assistance. Beslan
required
treatment of chronic myeloblast leukemia and needed to regularly come to
Moscow, where the treatment was available. During his illness the family
became extremely poor: they had no money not only for staying in Moscow,
but also for coming there. RGN's money was used to pay for their tickets,
boarding house and money for food. It cost $300.

This is Larissa Achurzaeva from village Gechi. In August of 2000 Russian
plane fell on her house, killed her husband, her son and four more
relatives. Although she was wounded, she survived and so survived her
daughter with whom she was pregnant at the time. Now her one year old
daughter Amina is her only family. Committee for Civic Assistance has
been
trying to help Larissa since September 2001. Moscow immigration services
declined her application for her status of forced migrant cynically saying
that she fled Checnya for economic reasons. Committee is providing
Larissa
with money for food and shelter. She is in Moscow now but committee
identified some dorm in Yzhevsk where Larissa was promised a place.

Ummat Temirchanove and Chava Mezhidova together are raising eight children
-- theirs and their relatives' from Checnya. Those people sent their
children away to keep them out of danger, to allow for normal nutrition
and
schooling. Now this big family lives in a Moscow studio. The family does
not receive any help from the government. Committee has been helping
these
two heroic women for a while now with money and food.

A thank you letter from Mrs. Luisa Amhadovna
Sultanova. Dated September 9, 2001
To the Rescuing Global Neighbors Organization
My name is Luisa Amhadovna Sultanova. A refugee from
Chechnya, I applied to the Citizen assistance program
for financial aid. On September 9, I received from
them aid in the amount of 1,300 Russian Rubles.
My children and I were at home in Grozny when our house
collapsed. All three of my children were wounded, two
of them seriously. Thanks to the help of Red Cross we
were moved to Moscow to receive medical treatment.
Later we were transferred to a specialized hospital in
St. Petersburg where we have remained for the last two
years. The only organization that has really helped
us was the Citizen Assistance. Since
they receive funds from you, I would like to thank
your organization as well for your support and
assistance to the needy. There is folk Chechen saying
"Find a good neighbor first and then buy your house."
We had to go through hell and survive to find out what
wonderful neighbors we have. Please accept my
heart-felt words of deep gratitude,
Sincerely,
Luisa Amhadovna Sultanova

in the village Alkhan-Yurt. His mother died in the same assault
but Iman's aunt brought him to Moscow to be treated for his
wounds. His right leg had to be amputated. While Iman is being
treated free of charge, RGN paid 29240 roubles (about $1000) for
an artificial leg for him. RGN also gives $25 a month to
his aunt for food & shelter while she stays in Moscow.

Doctors are trying to save Iman's left leg. This equipment is
provided free of charge.

Xenia Abashina, an eight year old from Tajikistan, lost an eye
as the result of an accident. Her mother brought her to Moscow where
the doctors operated on her eye (free of charge) but could not
restore the vision. The eye had to be removed but her mother
did not have the money to purchase an artificial eye.
|
RGN gave 1000 roubles (about $35) to buy an artificial eye
for Xenia.
|
Shuchran Shavkalova, 12 year old girl, lost the use
of her legs after she and her family were held up
for 3 days at control-check point under pouring
rain. This wheelchair was purchased with 6,500
roubles (about $220) sent by RGN.
